Scoot over to Somerville: have your say on the Active Recreation Hub

Mornington Peninsula Shire is inviting the local community to share their thoughts and ideas on the elements they would like to see at a brand new Active Recreation Hub in Somerville.

The Active Recreation Hub for Somerville would consist of approximately 300 square metres of designated BMX, scooter, bike and skate components and could include recreational features such as a multi-use court, parkour equipment and trampolines.

After undertaking a thorough site selection process, Mornington Peninsula Shire has determined the most suitable location to build the Hub is Fruit Growers Reserve (Edward Street side).

This site is centrally located close to schools, offers good passive surveillance, linkages to public transport and pedestrian connections, access to public toilets, as well as connections with other community facilities and services.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor David Gill said we have seen a rise in community interest for more diverse sporting, recreation and play opportunities on the Peninsula.

“Ultimately this is the best result for our community and will result in two new, high quality spaces – Somerville Active Recreation Hub and the Somerville Recreation Centre which is officially opening on 4 May 2019”.

You can join us at a drop in session at the official opening of the Somerville Recreation Centre to chat to key project officers about the proposed Active Recreation Hub and have your say on the components you would like to see at the site.

Watson Ward Councillor Julie Morris said we are determined to work in consultation with the community to ensure modern, integrated youth and family spaces are included in the new Activity Hub.

“We look forward to bringing better services to our Somerville community and surrounds. Together with the four-court stadium and sport fields the Somerville Active Recreation Hub will transform this area into an active precinct.”
