Planning for the future growth of our sports fields

12 March 2019

Consultation is closing soon! Don’t miss out on providing your thoughts on Mornington Peninsula Shire’s draft Sports Capacity Plan Volume 1 – Sports Fields. Consultation closes 5pm Friday 29 March 2018.

Participation in sport across the Mornington Peninsula has grown rapidly in recent years, particularly female and junior involvement in field-based sports such as Soccer and Australian Rules Football.

The result of this increase in participation has led to many sports fields in the Mornington Peninsula Shire being used at or in excess of their capacity.

The draft Plan provides Council with a framework to optimise use of existing sports fields and a plan for future growth and demand in field-based sports across the Shire.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor David Gill said the draft Plan will guide the upgrade and renewal of existing field-based sporting facilities and inform the development of new ones.

“It recognises a broad range of projects, from the development of new green field sites through to drainage, irrigation and lighting upgrade projects.

“We are inviting local community members and key stakeholders to engage with us regarding the Plan,” said Councillor Gill.

Areas where sports fields are nearing capacity are largely in the northern area of the Shire and at various other townships experiencing population growth.

The draft Plan also distinguishes areas in the Shire that will grow in the future and makes recommendations about the future needs for these areas.

The draft Sports Capacity Plan Volume 1 recommends the development and enhancement of facilities across the eight field-based sports to meet the current and future needs for the community, including:

  • Australian Rules Football
  • Soccer
  • Cricket
  • Athletics
  • Baseball
  • Softball
  • Rugby
  • Hockey.

“The Shire’s long-term goal is to expand the Sports Capacity Plan to encompass indoor sports (Volume 2) and non-field-based sports (Volume 3).

“This Plan, will deliver on the Shire’s commitment, as set out in the Council Plan 2017-21, to encourage increased participation in active and passive recreation.
