Work is underway to breathe new life in to Civic Court Reserve in Balnarring with plans for a performance and market space, nature-based play and much more.

A bit of rain couldn’t deter the Balnarring community who joined Shire Mayor Bryan Payne, Red Hill Ward Councillor David Gill, Daniel Mulino MP, State Member for Eastern Victoria and Heather Goddard, Chairperson Balnarring Bendigo Bank to officially turn the first sod of works at the reserve on Friday 31 August.

Also in attendance were members of the Balnarring Village Common Community Group which has been instrumental in getting the project off the ground as well as teachers and students from nearby Balnarring Preschool whose students often utilise the vacant reserve for outdoor play and activities.

The $640,000 project, with State Government contribution of $290,000 through the Growing Suburbs Fund, $300,000 in matched funding from Mornington Peninsula Shire, and a $50,000 contribution from Bendigo Bank, will foster participation in healthy outdoor recreation activities and enhance community connections in Balnarring.

Works will build on the high quality, remnant vegetation and make use of existing materials at the popular reserve to create:

• a performance and market space area;
• natural swales to improve drainage, and
• nature-based play elements.

Councillor Payne said the Shire looked forward to seeing the designs, developed with support from the Balnarring Village Common Community Group, become a reality.

“A lot of hard work has already gone in to the preparation and planning of this project and we’re all very excited to see some action on the ground”.

Councillor Gill said “This upgrade will create an attractive place for people to come together and become a well-utilised focal point for the township, where a range of community events can be held.

“I look forward to seeing the whole community, especially our local kids, enjoy this inclusive public space with family and friends for many years to come.
