2018 All Abilities Day

Mornington Peninsula Shire has been named as a finalist in the Victorian Sport Awards Victorian Local Government Initiative of the Year category for its annual All Abilities Day event and weekly Fit and Fun program for people with disabilities, held at Civic Reserve Recreation Centre in Mornington.

The award recognises a Local Government Authority that has made a significant contribution to sport in 2018 through the development of a participation program or facility.

All Abilities Day is an annual event held on the Peninsula to celebrate international day of people with disability and offer the community an opportunity to try out sports such as table tennis, golf, gymnastics, footy, soccer, tennis, dance and much more.

The initiatives are a key action of the Shire’s Disability Inclusion Plan which aims to work in partnership to achieve access and inclusion for people with a disability across the Mornington Peninsula.

The event is organised by the Shire in collaboration with several local sports clubs, peak bodies and service providers including: Belgravia Leisure; Special Olympics Victoria; Monash University; Mornington Peninsula Table Tennis Association; Mornington Youth Club Gymnastics; Elite Tennis Association; BAM Allstars; Cricket Victoria; AFL Vic; Golf Vic; Westernport Basketball; genU; Focus and Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery.

Such is the success of All Abilities Day that it has sparked the popular Fit and Fun program, launched in 2018 to provide a weekly opportunity for adults with a disability to participate in various sports and learn more about Health and Wellbeing.

Fit and Fun hosts guest speakers on a variety of topics and offers activities such as basketball, dance, table tennis and gymnastics with additional four-to-six-week training in cricket, soccer and tennis.

Shire Mayor Councillor David Gill said “All Abilities Day is a great event and it should continue for years to come.

“Being recognised as a finalist is a credit to all those involved in the coordination of the Mornington All Abilities Day event and I congratulate you for making it this far - regardless of the outcome of the awards, you have provided invaluable support to our community and that is a great reward in itself.

“I encourage everyone to keep an eye out for the 2019 All Abilities day in early December and try out the weekly Fit and Fun program”.

The Fit and Fun program is held at Civic Reserve Recreation Centre every Wednesday from 9.30am to 2.30pm during school terms, resuming on Wednesday 30 January. For more information or to book, phone: 5975 0133 or email: civicreserve@belgravialeisure.com.au

Each year the Victorian Sport Awards honour those who have made an outstanding contribution to sport in Victoria as an individual or team athletes, coaches, administrators and volunteers from both metropolitan and regional areas in Victoria.

The 2018 winners will be announced at a ceremony on Wednesday 20 February, 2019.
