It was a test of culinary skill as much as concentration for the 22 Frankston and Mornington Peninsula students competing in the 2018 VCAL Cook-Off competition on Thursday 13 September.

The fantastic event saw students competing in groups against one another to create a winning main meal and a dessert using a range of local ingredients and Mornington Peninsula Produce (MPP).

Held at the Frankston START Trade Training Centre, the competition was organised by the Frankston Mornington Peninsula Local Learning and Employment Network and the Peninsula VCAL Association, with support from Mornington Peninsula Shire which sourced the local produce through the MPP.

The contestants were coached while they were cooking their dishes and judged by a panel of top local food business professionals including: Sally Matt – Hillock Downs Produce, Josef Murray – Jackalope and Martin Goffin – Red Gum BBQ.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Bryan Payne said this event is a terrific way to not only showcase local students and industry professionals, but also to promote the fantastic local produce from the Mornington Peninsula region.

“We congratulate all the gifted students who participated in this competition and commend them on their efforts,” said Councillor Payne.

The main course winning team was Audrey Hynes and Jasmine Place from Flinders Christian College with their beef stir fry and cauliflower rice.

The dessert winning team was Amelia Griggs-Gordon and Aishah Haddara from Rosebud Secondary College with a delicious chocolate lava cake with candied beetroot.
