Have your say on the new Governance Rules

Published on 29 July 2020

Mornington Peninsula Shire has developed Governance Rules, in line with the new Local Government Act 2020,  which came into effect on 24 March 2020. The Act is the most ambitious reform to the local government sector in more than 30 years and will improve local government democracy, accountability and service delivery for all Victorians. The first phase of the Act requires all councils in Victoria to adopt and enforce Governance Rules.
The draft Governance Rules address the following:

  • Conduct of meetings
  • Council decisions
  • Delegated Committee decision making
  • Mayoral elections, including length of term and appointment of Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Acting Mayor
  • Election period
  • Conflict of interest disclosure
  • Any other matters prescribed by the Regulations (yet to be released).

Mornington Peninsula Shire is committed to working with the community to improve public confidence in decision making and ensuring decisions reflect the best interests of all sections of our community.
The community is invited to have their say on the proposed Governance Rules. Although there are legislative constraints, the Mornington Peninsula Shire wants to make sure that we can meet the expectations and requirements of the community where possible.
The Governance Rules will be available to download on our website from Wednesday 29 July 2020.
The final Governance Rules will be presented to Council for adoption on Tuesday 25 August 2020.
