Mornington Peninsula Shire has developed concept plans for the Rye Foreshore redevelopment as part of the $6.5 million Rye Township Plan.

As part of the Rye Foreshore redevelopment, the Shire will be upgrading the Foreshore Promenade, Foreshore Park and Foreshore Camping.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Sam Hearn said “we encourage the community provide their thoughts on the design concepts. The concepts have been informed by the Rye Township Plan which underwent extensive community consultation”.

Nepean Ward Councillor Hugh Fraser said “building on feedback from all the local community through the Rye Township Plan, these three key projects aim to embrace Rye’s local character while revitalising the area as the main gateway to the foreshore. This is the cumulation of a number of years outstanding work by Council working closely with all of the Rye community to realise this visionary transformative project for Rye.”

Nepean Ward Councillor Bryan Payne said “the Rye foreshore is beloved by locals and visitors alike. These upgrades to Rye’s promenade, park and camping will transform the area to better meet the needs of its users”.

Foreshore Promenade

The Foreshore Promenade will link the northern end of Napier Street to the Rye Pier providing both a physical and visual extension of the pier.

The update will see a wide deck extending the pier onto the land and includes a wide pedestrian crossing at Point Nepean Road to create a safe crossing to Napier Street Plaza.

With the foreshore being the main gateway to the township, these works will help express the local cultural significance of the area and signify its importance as a key attraction and spirit of Rye.

This redevelopment will see new outdoor furniture, public art, lighting and features to enhance the Foreshore Promenade, frames views out to the bay and create pedestrian zones for social gatherings, play and respite.

Foreshore Park

The Shire will be replacing the carparks next to the Rye Pier with public open space and redesigned car parking to improve usability and turn the park into a Rye attraction.

This new open space will become a destination for local community members to enjoy formal and informal events and range of recreation and leisure opportunities.

While enhancing and preserving the existing heritage character of this area in Rye, the Foreshore Park will bring new life to the township with:

  • a community playground
  • open lawns
  • seating areas
  • shade structures and picnic facilities
  • connections with surround streets and the beach
  • improved pedestrian and cycle links
  • an upgraded Bay Trail

Rye Foreshore Camping

The Foreshore Campground currently takes us a large portion of the Foreshore Reserve.

The popularity of camping in Rye has increased significantly since its beginning in the 1940s and has become ingrained in the local culture of Rye.

The current campsite limits the potential of the Foreshore Park and has resulted in vegetation clearing to accommodate the site.

In order to address current concerns and balance the needs of the campers, holiday makers and the community, the Shire will be removing existing campsites between Weir Street and Lyon Street and aiming to consolidate them within the remaining east and west campground areas.

Council will also be improving current camping services and upgrading the existing camping to meet the standard regulations.

This relocation will:

  • allow for the creation of the expanded Foreshore Park.
  • open up views of the Bay.
  • increase the recreational and leisure opportunities along the Rye foreshore.
  • improve movement through the foreshore and create more pockets of usable foreshore spaces.
