Have your say on the Draft Neighbourhood Character Study and Draft Western Port Coastal Villages Strategy
23 May 2019
You’re invited to provide feedback on two concurrent projects that are in the draft report stage: the Neighbourhood Character Study (entire Shire) and the Western Port Coastal Villages Strategy (Western Port townships only).
During the last stage of consultation, we heard what you value most about our townships, with this feedback being incorporated into both draft reports.
The Neighbourhood Character Study seeks to capture the unique values of the residential areas of the Mornington Peninsula to develop policy and guidelines to ensure better design outcomes for all residential areas across the Shire.
The Study contains a set of precinct-based preferred character statements and accompanying design guidelines that intend to capture the key characteristics of each area and the way these should be reflected in new residential development.
The Western Port Coastal Villages Strategy will provide policy and guidelines to manage development on public and private land to retain and enhance township character and address climate change impacts relating to sea level rise.
A Draft Design and Character Framework has now been prepared for each Western Port township that sets out a vision, the preferred character and design guidelines for the commercial, industrial, and foreshore areas.
Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor David Gill encourages the community to provide their thoughts on the two draft documents.
“These studies are underpinned by the adopted Housing and Settlement Strategy and aim to improve and protect the unique characteristics of the Mornington Peninsula as set out in the Council Plan 2017-21.
“This is a great opportunity for Council, community members and key stakeholders to discuss solutions about coastal climate change, as well as understanding the existing and preferred character attributes of our townships. The last step will be to include the guidelines in our planning scheme”, concluded Cr Gill.
