Mornington Peninsula Shire has a legislative obligation to review and prepare a new Local Law every ten years.

The General Purposes Local Law is now up for review and we want feedback on the issues you want us to enforce locally.

From building sites, to rubbish, to pets – the General Purposes Local Law covers a wide range of topics. It empowers us to respond to local issues and protect public and private space as well as our community’s health and safety.

The review process and what may or may not be included in Local Laws is legislated. For example, Local Laws must not overlap with or duplicate or conflict with existing State laws or Planning Schemes.

Consultation closes on Friday 19 November 2021.

Feedback from this initial round of consultation will help us consider emerging issues and ensure the local law is relevant.

Minor amendments to other Local Laws

The Short Stay Rental Accommodation Local Law regulates the use of short stay rental accommodation on the Peninsula. Although not yet due for renewal, we are considering minor amendments to streamline the registration process and make it easier to administer. An in-depth review is scheduled for 2023 and we will seek community input then.

A new Consumption of Liquor Local Law also needs to be prepared. This local law regulates consumption of alcohol on Shire-managed land. We will make some minor changes now so this local law is easier to understand with clearer maps and simplified wording.
