On Friday 10 November, Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Bev Colomb, Seawinds Ward Councillor Antonella Celi and Daniel Mulino MP – State Member for Eastern Victoria officially launched the $200,000 Destination Rosebud Gateway Sculpture.

The Gateway Sculpture commission was initiated by the Mornington Peninsula Shire as a component of Destination Rosebud, which was developed in partnership with the Victorian Government.

The Rosebud Gateway Sculpture is comprised of two elements, Sails and Helix Wave by innovative Melbourne artist/designer Matthew Harding and co-artist Benjamin Storch, who used timber from the dismantled Rosebud Pier to construct the sculpture.

The two elements reference the origin of the Rosebud name, which came from a cargo vessel that ran aground on the foreshore sandbars during rough weather in 1855.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Bev Colomb said “this is the first major sculpture supported by the Mornington Peninsula Shire. This is a fantastic and creative way for us to tell an important peninsula story”.

Seawinds Ward Councillor Simon Brooks said “the Gateway Sculpture and the Destination Rosebud project celebrates all things Rosebud – our history and our foreshore”.

Seawinds Ward Councillor Antonella Celi added “this sculpture creatively captures the historical aspect of Rosebud and I look forward to seeing it enjoyed by our locals and visitors alike”.

Seawinds Ward Councillor Frank Martin concluded “this sculpture plays an important part of the revitalisation of Rosebud and achieving the Destination Rosebud vision”.

The sculpture marks both the western and eastern entrances to Rosebud along Point Nepean Road and is an integral part of the Destination Rosebud project which aims to help reinvigorate the township by bringing new investment, jobs and opportunities for the community.

The magnificent Gateway Sculpture project is now entering its final stages of installation.
