Celebrate Library Week 2019: Knowledge, Integrity and Truth

10 May 2019

Join the Mornington Peninsula Friends of Lospalos at Mornington Library for an insightful author talk during Library Week 2019 (22 – 26 May). The theme for this year’s Library Week is Knowledge, Integrity and Truth.

On Thursday 23 May Bernard Collaery, an Australian barrister and principal of Collaery Lawyers, will be in conversation with Professor Clinton Fernandes, about his new book, Island off the Coast of Asia.

The book is a study of Australia’s external relations, offering a perspective on Australian diplomacy, military force and espionage in Timor Leste.

Their conversation will be of special interest with the Australia Government current prosecution of Witness K and Bernard Collaery pending in the ACT Magistrates Court.

Nepean Ward Councillor Hugh Fraser said the conversation would be an intriguing insight into the challenges faced by the Timorese community.

“The Mornington Peninsula Friends of Lospalos group has been operating for nearly 20 years, and through this group we continue to support our friends in the sub-district of Lospalos in the Lautem district of Timor Leste.”

“The group developed guiding principles to fund beneficial and sustainable community projects.”

“The opportunity to hear from Bernard Collaery and Professor Fernandes as they discuss the historical military actions of Australia and other operations of the Australia Government in Timor Leste is one not to be missed.”

Since the Friends group was established, project support and monitoring has been via self-funded committee volunteers who have travelled to Lospalos. Between 2000 and 2014, approximately 40 visits took place. Last year, the Friends group supported the local community by constructing a library room at a local Lospalos school, giving children access to books and other educational resources.
