Merricks: Merricks & Stanleys Road Roundabout Construction

Mornington Peninsula Shire is continually working towards improving its road network. As part of the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery Program, the Shire is installing a compact roundabout and modifying approach lanes at the intersection of Merricks Road and Stanleys Road, Merricks.

The intersection has been identified as high risk. Upcoming works will improve functionality and traffic safety significantly, and include the following components:

Installation of a compact roundabout
Pavement widening and overlay
Splitter island construction and line marking
Drainage improvements and kerb installation
Construction of two raised safety platforms on each approach leg to safely slow vehicles before the roundabout
Advance warning signage on approach to the speed humps and roundabout
Additional street lighting.

Though smaller than regular roundabouts, compact roundabouts offer plenty of space for safe navigation (large trucks can drive up on the central island). The Shire has also addressed community concerns by amending the design of the proposed compact roundabout. A comprehensive review process involving the Department of Transport (DoT), road safety consultants and a truck movement modelling specialist has resulted in some minor changes to the design. The amended roundabout design will better cater for larger vehicle movements with no adverse impacts to vehicle stability because of proposed Raised Safety Platforms.

Construction commenced in late February and is progressing well, and the project is expected to be completed in June 2023.
