Have your say: Dogs on McCrae Beach

The Mornington Peninsula Shire requires all dogs to be on a leash when in a public place. Across the Shire there are 62 areas where this requirement is varied, to prohibit dogs completely or to allow them to be ‘off leash’. A dog that is ‘off leash’ must still be under the effective control of its owner.

Dog Controls at McCrae Beach

The Shire is reviewing the controls on dogs at McCrae Beach, at the request of local residents.

The current controls vary along the length of McCrae Beach depending on exact location and also the time of year defined by the daylight savings period.

During daylight savings:

  1. Dogs are not permitted on the beach from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm.
  2. Dogs are permitted off leash (300metre section) from 7.00pm to 9.00 am the next day.

For the rest of the year:

  1. Dogs are permitted on the beach on a leash from 9.00 am to 5.00 pm.
  2. Dogs are permitted off leash (300metre section) from 5.00 pm to 9.00 am the next day.

The Shire is considering amending these controls in the 300metre section so they are consistent with the other leash free beaches, for example Rosebud Beach.

During daylight savings:

  1. Dogs are not permitted on the beach from 9.00 am to 7.00 pm (no change)
  2. Dogs are permitted off leash from 7.00 pm to 9.00 am the next day (no change)

For the rest of the year:

  1. Dogs are permitted off leash at all times.

Increasing the Length of the Leash Free Beach

The Shire is also reviewing the length of the leash free beach. Local residents have requested an increase in the length of the leash free area to the west of the Margaret Street Carpark, improving access to the leash free area for residents accessing the foreshore from the Beverly St crossing on Point Nepean Rd, McCrae.
