Have Your Say: Sports Capacity Plan

Participation in sport across the Mornington Peninsula Shire has grown rapidly in recent years, particularly female and junior involvement in field-based sports such as Soccer and Australian Rules Football.

The result of this increase in participation has led to many sports fields in the Shire being used either at, or in excess of their capacity.

The Sports Capacity Plan Volume 1 – Sports Fields will provide Council with a framework to optimise use of existing sports fields and a plan for future growth and demand in field-based sports across the Shire.

It will guide the upgrade and renewal of existing field-based sporting facilities and inform the development of new ones.

The Plan recognises a broad range of projects ranging from development of new green field sites through to drainage, irrigation and lighting upgrade projects.

Areas where sports fields are nearing capacity are largely in the northern area of the Shire and at various other townships experiencing population growth. The draft Plan also distinguishes areas in the Shire that will grow in the future and makes recommendations about the future needs for these areas.

The draft Sports Capacity Plan Volume 1 recommends the development and enhancement of facilities across the eight field-based sports to meet the current and future needs for the community, including:

  • Australian Rules Football
  • Soccer
  • Cricket
  • Athletics
  • Baseball
  • Softball
  • Hockey
  • Rugby.

The Shire’s long-term goal is to expand the Sports Capacity Plan to encompass indoor sports (Volume 2) and non-field-based sports (Volume 3).

This Plan, will deliver on the Shire’s commitment, as set out in the Council Plan 2017-21, to encourage increased participation in active and passive recreation. It also supports the Shire in developing programs and facilities, in conjunction with sporting club and community partners, to provide access to a range of active sports and passive recreation opportunities.
