Draft Wastewater Management Plan

You are invited to provide comments on the Shire's draft Wastewater Management Plan 2018-2023.

Wastewater disposal is one of the most important environmental issues currently facing the Mornington Peninsula.

There are thousands of properties across the Peninsula without reticulated sewerage, and all of these properties rely on septic tank systems to dispose of their wastewater.

To address the environmental and public health risks posed by wastewater on the Mornington Peninsula, the Shire has developed a draft Wastewater Management Plan 2018-2023 which is now available for community comment

The Shire has the highest number of septic systems of any Victorian municipality. Many of these systems were approved decades ago and are discharging bacteria and other contaminants into groundwater and waterways. Poorly maintained wastewater systems in sewered and un-sewered areas of the Shire also have the potential to contaminate local waterways.

This draft plan was developed with significant input from environment groups and the local wastewater industry. It will expand on wastewater management programs in the 2015-2018 Domestic Wastewater Management Plan and target key themes including:

  • Supporting South East Water sewerage programs
  • Linking wastewater management to the Shire’s Smart Water Plan
  • Continued education of residents and businesses on correct wastewater management
  • In consultation with residents and the local wastewater industry, development of a compliance and enforcement process to address failing wastewater systems

Following the public exhibition period, community comments will be assessed for inclusion in the adopted Plan
