Kerbside Garbage Collection
The garbage kerbside service comprises of an 80 litre green bin which is collected weekly.

Bins should be placed on the nature strip with the wheels facing your property the night before your collection day. All household waste should be bagged to prevent spillage during collection.

Once household and community waste is collected it is taken to the Shire’s landfill site in Rye.

Asbestos Disposal
Asbestos disposal guidelines have been put in place by Mornington Peninsula Shire Council in accordance with the EPA to help ensure the safety of the general public and all employees for the removal and disposal of a dangerous material.

1. All material suspected to be asbestos must be treated as asbestos until proven otherwise through tests performed by qualified independent authorised authorities.
2. All asbestos must be declared at gatehouse on arrival.
3. Any undeclared asbestos will be sent off site immediately. NO REFUNDS WILL BE GIVEN.
4. Asbestos MUST be double wrapped in 200 micron heavy duty builders' plastic and taped to seal completely.
5. Asbestos found not to be completely wrapped will be sent off site immediately.
6. Asbestos must be wrapped in quantities small, compact and light enough to be removed from trailer by hand by one person to reduce any risk of cuts or tears in the plastic.
7. Asbestos will not be accepted at the Waste Disposal Centres (transfer stations) at Mornington or Tyabb.
8. Only asbestos from a domestic source will be accepted.
9. Truck loads of asbestos (minimum size 3 tonne truck admitted) may also be taken to Devil Bend Landfill, 240 Balnarring Road (Melways ref: 152 C8), telephone 5989 7333.

Detox Your Home
The Shire now hosts permanent Detox Your Home facilities at each transfer station. At these facilities you can dispose for free, gas cylinders, paint, motor oil, fluorescent tubes, and all types of batteries (car batteries, ordinary household batteries and mobile phone batteries). You should never pour them down the sink or put them out with your kerbside collection as they can cause long term damage to the environment.

All collected material is recycled or treated based on the chemicals or materials they contain.

To reduce waste chemicals at home and the need to use such facilities, look for less hazardous alternatives, buy only the quantities you need and reuse leftover chemicals.

More information about reducing chemical use in the home can be found by using the Victorian State Government website on Sustainability link at the bottom of this page.

Get It Sorted - Getting the most out of your Resource Recovery Centre
Get It Sorted is a state wide campaign that aims to help communities use their local resource recovery centre to its full capacity.

Resource recovery centres are often referred as transfer stations or in many cases ‘tips’. These facilities provided in over 270 communities across Victoria and have been designed to help reduce the amount of waste we send to landfill and recycle as much as we possibly can.

Unlike landfills, resource recovery centres can accept a wide variety of recyclable materials and you are strongly encouraged to take advantage of the drop off services that are available for recyclable material.

Resource Recovery Centres within the Mornington Peninsula Shire are located at:

* Rye, Waste disposal centre Truemans Road Rye
* Tyabb, Waste disposal centre 21 McKirdy’s Road Tyabb
* Mornington, Waste disposal centre 134 Watt Road Mornington

You can recycle a wide range of materials at your local resource recovery centre including:

Cardboard & Paper (including liquid paperboard) ~ Cardboard boxes (please flatten) and all types of paper including newspapers, magazines, envelopes, brochures, catalogues, phone books. Please don’t include waxed cardboard boxes.

Plastics (Codes 1-7) ~ Clean milk bottles, soft drink bottles, cordial bottles, detergent bottles, juice bottles, ice cream, margarine, takeaway, yogurt containers and lids. Please don’t include plastic bags or polystyrene.

Glass ~ Clean bottles and jars (green, brown and white). Please don’t include broken drinking glasses, window glass or crockery.

Aluminium & Steel ~ Cans, clean foil tray and clean steel cans are accepted.

Batteries ~ Car and truck batteries.

Scrap Metal ~Car bodies, iron, steel, wire, whitegoods.

Green Waste and Timber ~ This includes your lawn clippings, branches, garden prunings and timber (no treated pine). Please don’t contaminate your green waste with plastic, metal or concrete. (Charges apply)

Waste Oil ~ Clean used or unwanted motor oil can be disposed of into the collection tanks (maximum 20 litres per visit).

drumMUSTER ~ Clean and empty chemical drums (both plastic and steel) are accepted. There must be NO trace of chemical residue. (Tyabb and Rye sites only)

Gas cylinders ~Empty gas cylinders are accepted

Paint ~ Unwanted paint (maximum 20 litres per visit)

E - Waste ~ Including computers, monitors, keyboards, mouse, printers and mobile phones

By the time you have disposed of all your recyclable materials, you should have very little rubbish to disposal of.

Once you trailer or ute is empty, you might be able to pick up a load of great garden mulch or grab a bargain at the Reuse Centre in Mornington for your next building project.

So now you know all you need to know about your local resource recovery centre. Remember, unsorted loads cop the maximum fee, so GET IT SORTED!

The Get It Sorted campaign is an initiative of the Association of Victorian Regional Waste Management Groups, supported by the Victorian Government Sustainability Fund and your local Shire.
