| Mornington Peninsula Shire Council is one of 79 local government councils in the state of Victoria, south-east Australia.
The municipality of Mornington Peninsula Shire was created in December 1994 following the State Government's reform of local government. The Shire has a population of more than 140,000 people, increasing to more than 200,000 during the peak summer period. It covers 720 square kilometres and with coastal boundaries of 192 kilometres (10% of Victoria's coastline), sea access is predominant in the Peninsula's place in history as the first European settlement in the state of Victoria at Sullivans Bay, near Sorrento, in 1803.
The Council of Mornington Peninsula Shire comprises 11 people elected from the community every three years to represent the interests of all residents and ratepayers in the governing of the Shire.
Councillors are not paid a salary but receive an allowance. They act in a voluntary capacity and are involved in many council committees and community activities.
Mornington Peninsula Shire, along with all Victorian Councils, is bound to act within the provisions of the Local Government Act. There are many other State Government Acts which regulate the powers of the Council, including the Health Act, Planning and Environment Act, Building Control Act, etc.
Mornington Peninsula Shire is part of the local government structure and is the third tier of Australia's democracy, alongside State and Federal Parliaments. It is the level of government that is the most accessible to the public. The Council is the community's government and the staff serve the community in carrying out Council's decisions.
