Starting a Business  Printer Friendly

The growth of south eastern Melbourne has meant that the Mornington Peninsula has become widely recognised as an ideal location to establish or expand a business.

Significant employment, business and lifestyle opportunities exist throughout the highly diverse economy of the Peninsula, with evidence of this easily identified through the ever increasing number of home-based businesses being established.

The majority of employment on the Peninsula is generated by activities such as retailing, construction, business services, health, education and community services.

Many of these activities have strong links to tourism, with the Mornington Peninsula recently recognised as the most popular daytrip destination outside of Melbourne.

Employment throughout the forty townships is supported by the demands of both residents and tourists. The importance of the tourism industry is further emphasised with the population swelling from approximately 140,000 persons to more than 200,000

What Approvals are Required?
Every business on the Peninsula needs to comply with certain regulations. In some instances this may mean obtaining a permit or relevant certificate before you commence the business or change the type of business. However, it pays to ALWAYS make sure that you are aware of what the relevant requirements are.

On this webpage are issues you may need to consider. These issues are by no means the complete list you should consider and not all of the issues may be relevant to your business, as different types of business need to comply with different requirements.

Planning Issues
• Is the type of business appropriate to the area? In some instances the proposed use may actually be prohibited – especially in residential areas.
• Do you have sufficient car parking spaces - including spaces for your employees and your customers? This is particularly relevant in restaurants/cafes if the number of patrons is to be increased, and ensures that your customers can always park near your business.
• What hours will your business open?
• How will you be promoting your business – what size and type of signs will be used?

For further information on planning, please visit the Planning Services section of our website.

Building Issues
• Do you have the appropriate number and location of exits throughout the building?
• Does the design and layout of the building allow for safe access by disabled persons?
• Is the number and location of fire extinguishers, sprinklers, and hydrants sufficient?
• Are you increasing the number of patrons, as this affects the required floor space and the number of toilets required?
